Make More Garbage to Produce More Energy?

Everyone please remember when reading, writing or talking about global warming, our oil dependency and population growth:

“Energy is not renewable. Only some earth-based sources give that appearance. “

An article on CNet regarding the use of garbage and waste to generate power made a statement regarding renewable energy.

Solar energy isn’t the only renewable resource: there’s also garbage.”

Remember, all net energy additions to the planet come essentially from the sun. We do not “create” or renew energy.

“Energy is not renewable.”

I think we’d all agree that garbage is far from a resource we’d like to keep renewing. We should be looking to reduce or eliminate the waste from production.

The fuels we choose to use to convert to a form of energy more helpful to us, convert in a variety of efficiencies and with a variety of side-effects e.g. CO2 production from combustion, silted rivers from hydroelectric dams and food cropping sacrificed for fuel cropping.

The recent “Tortilla Crisis” is an example of an unintended side-effect of shunting more corn into the fuel cycle and out of the food cycle.

In the short-run over the next decade, our best approach to mitigate climate impact, reduce pollution and lessen our dependence on foreign sources of fuel:

  1. Avoid excess use (conserve) and reduce waste.
  2. Emphasize solar and localized wind generation.
Do you agree? What are your thoughts?

Nasal Cleansing and Your Product’s Promotion

A few weeks ago Oprah had Dr. Oz on her show. He’s one of the doc’s from RealAge but that’s not what’s interesting here.

Do you know about neti pots? They look like little teapots with a spout just big enough to fit nicely into one of your nostrils which is precisely what you do with it. You pour the nasal cleansing solution into one nostril while tilting your head to the side so that the solution, poured in the one nostril drains out the other. I know this because I have one!

Now here’s what’s fascinating. Most people would say “gross” to the neti treatment. “No way am I gonna do THAT!”. EXCEPT if it’s on Oprah. Then, well, it must be ok right?

Turns out that after the Oprah session with Dr. Oz there was a market run on neti pots and they flew off the shelves!

So what’s the point? If Oprah can make something as arcane as netti pots used for cleaning out your nose and sinuses fly off the shelves then their hope for your products too! You just have to find the right “Oprah” and audience for your industry and get your product or service endorsed.

The Pursuit of Happiness err I mean Money

Click Here to take my micro, 3 question survey “Pay and Happiness.”

Ok. I know money’s not everything. But it’s something. In fact its part of what we trade our time for doing what we do. So we all make choices and decisions about how much of our time we’re willing to trade away and what we expect in return.

Does your current balance of time traded for pay make you feel happy enough that you don’t want any more pay?

So, click here to take my micro, 3 question survey “Pay and Happiness.”

I’ll post the results by the end of the day on Thursday.
