“Want Fries with that Prescription?”

June 20th, 2007

I just saw a TV advertisement with the rhetorical tagline “What if you could do everything without having to get out of your car?”

Examples from the ad included: Refereeing a soccer game; listening to chamber music; and shoe shopping. The ultimate product they want you to get without getting out of your car? Your prescription drugs.

Edward Abbey in his classic 1960’s book “Desert Solitaire” about his time as a park ranger in the desert southwest, railed against those who wouldn’t step out of their cars to experience the desert and its beauty.

So, we’ve had drive-up fast-food for quite some time.

Then I guess it’s only logical, since obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S., we should be working ourselves towards a complete drive-up economy just like in the TV ad.

Including drive-up obesity treatment prescription drugs.

We need to make better decisions as individuals, businesses and a society to get ourselves out of our love affair with the automobile and back into a healthier life of moving around on our own.

When I read your post title on Twitter, I thought maybe McDonald’s or Wendy’s decided to start a pharmacy business. Would be so convenient to get your fries and anti-obesity drugs in one order! In fact, maybe you’d get anti-obesity fries?

I think this is an urban planning as well as individual decision issue though. I’ve never owned a car, but this is only possible because I’ve always lived in big cities. In sprawly places like Houston or Dallas, you can’t really get anywhere on foot.

I’m heading to the gym today at 10:15 am. Why not join me.

BTW, Portland was just rated the city with the highest level of biking-to-work people in the US.

Actually in spite of obesity I think a drive up drug store is a smart move. Consider for a moment who it is that often buy prescription medication, the sick and the elderly. It only makes sense to have a drive through. So yes to this but lets make the fast food patrons walk!

Unfortunately, society wants everything faster and easier. We seem to be living in the fast lane for some reason. It seems like we never have enough time to do all the things we wish to do. And in many ways that contributes to the problem with obesity.
