I’m Not Wrong! You’re Not Right!
It seems that polarization stealthily crept into many different areas in our lives. Obviously in politics positions get framed as “either/or”, “black/white”, “with us/against us” etc. Within other organizations and businesses this type of thinking has invaded and taken hold.
The Fallibility Principle
In order to have a reasonable debate or discussion, all parties must come to the table with a potentially changeable position.
The Fallibility Principle states this:
Accept the fact that you are fallible and could be wrong, or perhaps not holding the most defensible position. If you don’t accept the your own fallibility, you in effect are saying you won’t change your mind. You are locked in because you “know” you are right.
QUESTION
Do you work for a boss or an organization which understands this principle and states it explicitly?
If not what problems does it cause?
